Living Labs, a key activity of the LIVERATION Project, are born from the commitment to improve the care experience and the quality of life of people living with liver cancer.
As researchers, we aim to understand how individuals with liver cancer, as well as their caregivers and family members, experience the care they receive throughout the healthcare journey.
More specifically, this study aims to answer the following research question: What are the priorities and potential for collaborative innovation to improve care experience and quality of life for patients with liver cancer, from the perspective of different stakeholders in Europe?
Hence, our goal is to
• identify gaps and needs of the patients, caregivers and professionals,
• prioritize them,
• and work towards solutions that contribute to better, more person-centred care experiences.
This project takes its name from the Living Labs methodology it uses. A Living Lab can be described as a creative, collaborative space that brings together different people and groups to co-create recommendations or innovations that address current needs in a real-world context (Malmberg, 2017).

Going into more detail, we aim to generate valuable knowledge in three main thematic areas that can help improve the care experience for people living with liver cancer. These thematic areas are Quality of Life, Cancer Care Experience and Adoption of Innovation.

To conduct our research, in 2026 and 2027 we plan to organise and host a series of workshops where participants will be invited to discuss one of the three themes mentioned above, based on their own experiences with liver cancer.
These sessions will provide a safe and welcoming space where participants can share their lived experiences and valuable insights. Each session will be guided by a moderator who facilitates the discussion and supports participants throughout. Together, we will explore ideas and co-create valuable knowledge that can make a meaningful difference.
These sessions will be conducted either virtually or in person, depending on the preferences of the group, and will be conducted in the local language.
With the collaboration of research partners in several countries, our aim is to organize at least one session in each of the following countries: France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.
LIVERATION Living Labs are designed to hear from people whose voices and lived experiences are essential to improving liver cancer care. Therefore, our project welcomes the participation and insights of:
• Persons with lived experience of liver cancer (patients, survivors, patient representatives)
• Caregivers or family members of someone who has experienced liver cancer.
• Healthcare professionals involved in liver cancer care (nurses, physicians of different specialities, mental health professionals…)
• Health managers and administrators.
• Research and development professionals (biomedical researchers, technology developers, medical manufacturers)
The workshops are standalone events and last 2 hours taking place on a specific day.
If you choose to participate in one of the Living Labs workshops, you will be required to attend the workshop you have enrolled in on the scheduled date, either in person – where applicable and agreed in advance – or virtually. In the latter case, the meeting invitation will be sent to you by email in advance.
Before the scheduled day, you will be asked to sign an informed consent form to confirm that you are participating voluntarily.
On the day of the sessions, before the workshop begins, participants will be asked to complete a short paper-based questionnaire. If the workshop is held online, this questionnaire will be sent by email to the workshop’s participants a few days before the workshop takes place.
Finally, there would also be the option to arrange and conduct a brief individual interview with potential participants as an alternative to the group session, for those who are unable or prefer not to take part in a group format but would still like to share their valuable experience and contribute to the ongoing research.
The researchers conducting this project are part of the Avedis Donabedian Research Institute, an organization that works closely with healthcare professionals, centres, public administrations, citizen organizations, and other public and private institutions, all sharing a common commitment to improving the quality of health and social services.
The Living Labs are part of the LIVERATION project. This project is carried out in collaboration with the following institutions:
This project is part of a larger project entitled “Unravelling the impact of Radiofrequency in liver surgery: the key to decrease local recurrence? (LIVERATION)”, a European Union-funded Horizon project within the Mission on Cancer framework (Grant Agreement No. 101104360).
LIVERATION is a pragmatic multi-centre clinical trial that brings together researchers, clinicians, and patients from 7 countries and 24 hospitals.
